Another Shellinator Admin Adventure

I've mentioned before that I am one of 9 Administrators (Admin) for a facebook page called the Shellinators. This group has grown to over 20,000 people in the short 5 years since it began. A few of us Admins got together over the weekend and went out on a boat ride, shelling and for lunch! It was a BEAUTIFUL day and the water was a gorgeous turquoise!

We took a lot of pictures, and even though I've cut them back, there are still so many... so I'll keep the chit chat to a minimum....

This is Donnie, the originator of the Shellinators...THE Shellinator, and his Fiance', Christine, The Shellinatriss...Donnie very recently proposed to her on a shelling trip, hid the ring in a shell pair, and when she turned around, he was on one knee!!! How cool is that!
From left is Cheri...(the other half of Team Cheri), Cindy, (the Matriarch of the group and the hostess with the mostest for today) and Me!
We started out at Cayo Costa, an island only accessible by boat that has a state park. Four of us, Cindy, Christine, Cheri and myself walked the beach,

while Donnie went to the water for some free diving, all looking for shells....we covered ALL the territory!

Donnie found a few live Horse Conchs, Olives and Whelks....but almost nothing to take home...

We found very little to nothing!
We did find a gator!
I couldn't resist taking a picture of these guys fishing....does this seem strange to anyone else?

We decided to move on to a sand bar that our guide Randy had suggested....the water was crystal clear, though the tide was coming in so the current was fairly strong....

Christine joined Donnie in the water...
While Cheri and I walked around the bar itself...

Cheri immediately found some Sea Hare...that were washing up onto the sand of the bar...The biggest ones we had ever seen!!! The ones I'm used to seeing on Sanibel fit in your hand!

the Sea Stars were also washing up on the sand....
so we spent a lot of time saving lives! ;) . She also found some kind of huge worm out there....this one Cheri didn't touch!!
Donnie and Christine found a few things on their dive...

and Cheri picked up some awesome coral pieces...
It was really nice being out in the water...we spent quite a while looking....

We looked around for a few other places to shell, but decided instead to head to Cabbage Key for lunch...I had never been!

Cabbage key and the restaurant are only accessible by boat and it is really a booming place!

You may have heard of it, the bar in the restaurant, has $1 bills that are signed and placed all over the walls and ceiling! Cindy signed one...
Christine did too....

and of course, I had to join in...

5 of 9 of us! From L: Cindy, Me, Cheri, Christine and Donnie

Outside the restaurant there are Gopher Tortoise that are free to roam and have there dens protected....they are named after the teenage mutant ninja turtles!
In the canal on the way back to the boat, we saw these Mallards....we were told that they are not native to this part of Florida and were brought here as ducklings....
They are very talkative and seem very content...

On the way back in we did see one Dolphin, he was a bit sluggish and not interesting in playing, but I did manage to snap a couple of pics....

We have had so many groups of admins together, since not all of us live here it's been difficult....the biggest group was a couple of years ago....8 got together for lunch....I was the only one missing! :(   One day I hope all of us will meet in person...and have an adventure together...most of us 'talk' daily...online!

Stay tuned...

A Three hour Cruise and Mini Hunting

Team Cheri has been out and about the last couple of days, on one adventure after another! Yesterday, Cheri's Hubby's Brother in Law, decided to rent a boat and learn how to drive it! So they invited me to go along, on a 'Three hour cruise'....  It was such a beautiful day!

They dropped us off at Cayo Costa for a bit, while they practiced and we walked the beach! Imagine that! We didn't go very far and ran into an area with lots of minis!
Cheri's Hubby (left) and his Brother in law.....
Cayo Costa has always been a beautiful place to me, and it's been quite a few years since I've been!
North Captiva from Cayo Costa point.... Check out that beautiful water

I managed to find my FIRST Speckled Tellin.....minus the speckles! ....
and a nice spiny Jewel box....
Cheri found a bunch of these tiny Bittersweets...
...we both found quite a few colorful coquinas, a couple of false angel wings, and several other minis....The Sanibel Shellcrafters need colorful coquinas so I will continue the search, wherever we go! It's kinda nice to have a specific goal!
When we got back to the dock, Cheri got these amazing pictures.....
A Manatee (with a fresh propeller wound on his back) :(
and this cool Pelican....AMAZING pics Cheri! Thank You!

This morning, Team Cheri went back out right at sunrise to find some treasures....
the tides aren't very good in the morning now, and we didn't have much luck at the first beach, we left and went to another....not much there either! But there's always something to see!

This morning there were lots of Shell Egg Casings on the beach....hopefully most had already hatched because these guys were way up on the beach and pretty dry!

This is a huge Apple Murex Egg Casing....
On the left is Lightning Whelk Cases and the group on the right is Florida Horse Conch!
I did find a live Spiny Jewel box...
and a few minis, buried in the mud....
From The top: Dusty Cone, Juvenile Horse Conch, Wentletrap, Olive, Lace Murex and a Tusk shell
From the left: Nutmeg,Apple Murex, Bubble shell, Tiny rice Olive, another Dusty cone, Lace Murex, Juvenile Fighting Conch, Horsie, Coquina pair, Worm shell, Keyhole Limpet and another tiny Wentletrap
and of course Cheri is a Wentletrap magnet! She has quite a collection, and added many more today...this was just in one spot!
I did find a nice Chocolate True Tulip...
Remember that Lightning Whelk Egg Casing? We decided to check it out, Cheri Split it with me and we each took half home.  This one, unfortunately had not emptied itself....these are amazing....
Each little disk has a whole in the end where the live baby shells come out and release into the Gulf when it is time....
I tore this ONE disk open to show how many of these Lightning Whelks there are!

Here is a size comparison....so tiny, and they already have the colored stripes of the traditional Lightning Whelk!! So amazing!
Here's one all grown up! ...This is just an average sized one, they get huge!

Now comes the tedious job of getting them all out and cleaned them up!....
Stay Tuned!
